| Show THE MAN DIOGENES HUNTED FOR FOUND AT GREENWICH UT indian war veteran two pensions and returned ono one without being told here is how the salt lake tribune plays up the honesty of 0 a citizen of 0 greenwich the little town that lies in grass valley just south 0 of koo sharem diogenes has hag no use for his lantern in utah in the opinion of mrs airs E al cohen state pensions commissioner mrs airs cohen has turned over to the state treasurer daniel 0 larson 15 which had been awarded by the state board of examiners to joseph west of greenwich mr west returned the money received some time ago when he was notified by the united states bureau of pensions that his claim for a pension as a veteran of the black hawk campaigns in utah had been allowed the utah law passed in 1919 provided a fund of which should be divided equally among veterans of utah indian wars or the widows of such veterans whose claims have not and are not likely to be admitted as by the federal government ern ment the united states bureau of pen is fairly strict about the disposition of uncle sams money and it appeared to mrs airs cohen and to the state board of examiners that there was a doubt from the condition of the records that mr west lest would ever be able to substantiate his claim with the federal bureau the state board therefore awarded mr west the 15 out of the utah fund with the caution that hat should the federal claim be allowed lie he would return the 15 to the state tobe abe available for someone else in ili less fortunate circumstances mr west returned the money just as soon as lie he had received his check from the federal government and without waiting for the formal rei quest from the state pensions pension coni commissioner in all about 1000 veterans or their widows have so far participated in the states fund at the rate of 15 each in ili only four instances has the money gone to persons who were not qualified under the law to receive it in two of these cases it has been re turned the other car cabo a being that of a tt fadow to whom tho the award had bad been sent owing to a confusion of similar names |
