Show The Vital Metal There is hardly a manufacturing, manufactur-ing, transportation or communication communica-tion industry which does not depend, de-pend, to some extent, on copper. It is the most essential of all base metals. Electric service, the telephone, railroad transportation, the manufacture of appliances for the home copper is vital to them all. The part it has played in the industrial history of the twentieth century hai been of the greatest importance and through a long line of preceding centuries copper has wielded a tremendous influence influ-ence on social and economic evolution. evo-lution. At the moment, copper is in the doldrums. That is partly due to the general depression, partly to cheap-labor foreign competition, partly to short-sighted tax and legislative policies in some of the mining states. The depression is passing. And we should take the steps needed to help copper producers pro-ducers solve those other problems which act as a barrier to the industry's in-dustry's natural development. |
