Show Taxpayers Assn. Displeased With Old Age Pensions The old age pension bill which passed the state legislature is a transfer of the vicious dole system of England to America and would be a means of pauperizing the aged and infirm in the state, according to a communication which has just been sent by the Utah Taxpayers Association Associa-tion to our Board of County Commissioners. Commis-sioners. The Taxpayers Association ooints out the demoralizing effect which would be produced upon the beneficiaries of this measure and al-Iso al-Iso the tendency to loot the public Ureasury. The communication states that no county commissioners are obliged to adopt this measure, inasmuch inas-much as it is wholly optional. Attention is called to Governor Dern's statement when the bill was signed to the effect that the social welfare workers were against it. He also compared it -with the dole system in England and the pauperizing effect of such practice. But never-the-less the bill was permitted to go through. The Taxpayers Association urges-the urges-the county commissioners to continue their present practice of studying each individual case and treating it according to its needs and not to adopt any standarized money giving as provided under the old age pension pen-sion law. On this ubject the Taxpayers Taxpay-ers state that county commissioners cannot increase their present budget without a public hearing and that 'inasmuch as the social welfare work-' work-' ers of the state are unanimously opposed op-posed to the plan of the old age pension, pen-sion, county commissioners cannot afford to plunge into this unhappy experiment. The Taxpayers agree that the aged should be taken care of, but in an intelligent, effective manner. They contend that the average aged person is unable to handle his own money or to spend it wisely. The old age pension does not provide for any supervision or control of the money given to the aged. This is the pernicious feature cf th3 bill. introduced in every legislative session ses-sion in every state in the union over a period of years and does not have its ciig'.n in this state; The bill was censidered dc-ad in committee but was suddenly taken out at the very close cf the session and hurriedly passed. ?ome of tho-e who voted for the mcavj-s later stated that they hart understood that it was in keeping with the wishes of the social welfare workers which, however, is contrary to fact. It is not expected that any county in the state will accept the old age pension plan on account of the unfortunate un-fortunate experiences which other states had with this identical, standardized stan-dardized measure. Sanpete County is an "Old Man's" County and cannot accept the old age pension plan. It would do well to encourage the young men to remain re-main in the county and help build up new industries. The old boys have already got everything there is (all the land, water and everything) and there is absolutely no encouragement to keep the young fellows at home. |
