Show Pay of Teachers Average salaries of public school teachers in the United States were slightly increased during the last two years, according to the overnment office of education in Washington, but for the county as a whole are only on-ly $1,372 a year, as compared with an average of $1,277 two years ago. Only three states pay their teachers teach-ers an average salary of as much as $2,000 a year New York, New Jersey and California which barely reach that figure. The three lowest states, Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi, pay an average less than $700 a year, many rural school teachers earn less than $500. It can not be deenied that considering consider-ing the preparation required in order to obtain cerificates our public school teachers are miserably underpaid. On the other hand, teacher's salaries are governed, like most other services and commodities, by the law of supply and demand. And in spie of the ever increasing rums made available for schools, it seems impossible to absorb the available avail-able supply of teachers at adequate salaries. |
