Show Institute Is Held For Farmers and Housekeepers A Farmers and Housekeepers Institute Insti-tute was held Tuesday at the High School building at which a large number of men and women attended. Afton Odell, Extension Clothing Specialist, gave a Lecture Demonstration Demonstra-tion on "Shoes and Foot Hygiene and Relationship of Shoes to Health," to the women. Prof. Byron Alder spoke on the Poultry industry of Utah and Its rapid development. He said it was doing very well in some districts. He stated that it was low in production in volume, but was high on average farm production. produc-tion. He spoke of Utah producing $1,500,-100 $1,500,-100 worth of Poultry products annually making an increase of 58 per cent in years. Some communities are producing pro-ducing from $10,000 to $20,000 cash weekly and said we were not producing what we could in Mt. Pleasant. An increase in-crease of 500 and 600 per cent had been made in some communities by reason of cooperation. No community can develop by scrapping other com munities. Prof. Alder was of the opinion that the poultry business would not be overdone while any of us are living. He mentioned market conditions and stated that the New York market was still good. One cannot get good results with poor houses, poor fouls, poorly fed. He said there was no reason why Mt. Pleasant could not have an increase -.imilar to American Fork, Draper and some other communities, and complimented compli-mented Mt. Pleasant for having some good flocks. He advised gathering eggs four or five times daily and good care of them in a cool basement. Much depends on how pullets are handled during hot summer months. One of the causes of loss of chicks is poor brooder house. He gave a number of illustrations and told how to make a chicken house. He advised using glass substitute. Burke. In the afternoon Prof. George B. Caine, Head of the U. S. A. Dairy Department De-partment discussed "Trends in Dairy Production, Problems Vital to Success of the Business and the Place for Dairying on the average Sanpete County Co-unty farm. He urged them to go into '.he dairy business more extensively. A long period of time was used in a general discussion of many phases of :he dairy business. He emphasized the importance of feeding the dairy tow then spoke of diseases, of cows and :ow testing, pure breeding and increased increas-ed production. He said good cows sell from $175 to $255. |
