The committee has been called to meet next Monday to consider this measure. Although he has repeatedly said he would not give any thought at the Approaching short session to the lUdstion of tax reduction, he had little lit-tle comment to make on the tax credit, idea after a conference with Secretary Mellon. During this visit he obtained some new information on the condition of the treasury which led ;.lie president to favor a return of he prospective surplus of his fiscal year to the taxpayers. While he appeared none too optimistic opti-mistic over the prospect of tax battle at the approaching session, Mr. Green said he would give study to the administration's ad-ministration's plan and probably would make an announcement of his views shortly. Neither is the committee chairman very hopeful that fhe president's suggestion sug-gestion for nonpartisan consideration of the tax proposal will get very far, and it is understood he painted a rather gloomy picture to Mr. Mellon of the obstacles tax legislation might face at this session. He held brighter views, however, about the alien property hill and he invited Mr. Mellon and Undersecre-, tary Winston to appear before the committee nexf week and outline the itand of the administration on this proposal, which would work out a plan for the immediate return of all j.li-en property still held by the government. govern-ment. It is believed that Mr. Green will indorse the administration tax plan which would peitmit income taxpayers taxpay-ers to obtain a credit of about 25 per cent on their first two payments of next year if he approves of any tax legislation at this time. |
