ERS HOURS Night Workmen East Breakfast at Home for First Time In Many Years; Child, ren Happy Gr.ry, n Eiht-hour -working shirts were put in effect in the Gary mills of the United States Steel corporation cor-poration Monday. The shift from the twelve-hour day wiil he gradual, it is said, due to the shortage of labor. Four open hearth furnaces were put on the new schedule sched-ule Monday with SUO new workers. The furnaces are still in need of men. All coke ovens will start on the eijrht-hour day at midnight. Twelve blast furnaces will change over from the twelve to the eight-hour eight-hour schedule as soon as men are available. The labor situation, company officials of-ficials said, was loosening up since announcement of the new shifts with 25 per cent wage increases. Hundreds of laborers are movinp into the Gary district. The men who worked the first eight-hour shift were able for the first time to enjoy recreations at their homes. Instead of nn empty dinner bucket, wearied step and a rush to catch a few hours' sleep, these men, after working eight hours beginning mid-night mid-night came home for breakfast. For many children was the first time they had seen "daddy" at the home table. Long streets, lined with workmen's cottages, were filled with laughing children as their fathers joined in their games. Many back yards were broken up as other laborers started family gardens. |
