Show Women's Costumes Old Controversy In trying to make the women of Rome conform to certain rules and regulntlons regarding the proper dress In which to appear in public, the church authorities In the Eternal city nre following very ancient example. They are shocked by some of tha modern modes but so were the lawgivers law-givers In some parts of Italy as far back as the year 6S0 B. C. that Is, more than 2,G00 years ago. It may be said, of course, that probably prob-ably before that very ancient date and certainly In many ages and In many places since then, the Attempt has been made by male lawgivers to Indicate to women what they should and should not wear. However, at the very early date named, Zaleucus, a lawgiver of the Locrians, a people of southern Itnly of Greek origin, ordnlned that "no respectable woman should go attended In the street by more than one maid or wear gold or embroidered apparel." |
