Show 52 Are Killed in Michigan Mine Ishpeming Mich Hope that any ot the forty-five men unaccounted for in the cavein at the Barnes-Hecker mine are still alive has been abandoned. Seven bodies recovered at 6 o'clock Thursday night bring the total victims vic-tims of the disaster to 52. All efforts are now being directed at the recovery of the bodies. Daylight saw a bailer, set up under the glare of floodlight during the night, biting into the tangled mass of mud, rock and timber, that bars the way from the surface to the first level, in which it is believed several bodies are. These are thought to be those of miners who, warned by the blast of air and rumbling which ' followed the cavein, made an attempt to escape, only to be caught by the falling debris in sight of the surface. Other bodies,- believed entombed on the second and third levels of the mine may not be recovered for days. |
