It Is called Smith's l-'ort, but as a n.atier cf historical accuracy the building erected by tV.pt. .Inhn Smith In llil'S and named by him New Fort .stood about a quarter of a mile to the we.i of this house and now f i w traces of the old Indian defense are to bo seen. Tiie Colonial records show that the house was built by Thomas Warren War-ren in l'.'ii'i on land bought by him from Thomas Kolte, son of John Kolfe and Pocahontas, daughter of the famous fa-mous Indian king Powhatan, There Is a tradition connected with one of the closets in this afed house. From one in an upper room a trap door and a stationary ladder led down to a brick walied closet In the basement from which It Is said an underground passage pass-age led to the original Smith's fort on the banks of a crock nearly n quarter of a mile away.
