Show THIEVES II i mm All ESCAPE Axtell, Sterling1, Aurora and Loa Offices Entered; Money and Stamps and Other Loot Carried Away by Thieves. Robbing four posloffices within a period of less than forty-eight hours and escaping thus far, is the record f a band, of auto-driving fheives that stagad some hurry-up stunts the first of the week. The Axtell poatoffice, the postoffioe at Sterling, Aurora and Loa, according to well founded reports, were robbed slnca last Sunday night. Reports of the thefts have been made and government govern-ment sleuths are now on the trail and though' only slight clues were available at the start, it is believed that the culprits will be apprehended apprehend-ed soon. The robberies evidently vere committed in quick succession, starting at Loa and working northward. north-ward. The Loa stunt was pulled off, as near as can be learned, early Sunday night, and it is believed that the Aurora office was visited about midnight Sunday. The Axtell robbery was committed about two-thirty two-thirty Monday morning and from there it is believed the band of thieves thie-ves beat it hurriedly to Sterling. So far no reports of other robberies were reported and it is likely the bunch beat it northward. The robbery at Axtell will prove a big loss to Mrs. Jacobsen, who, in addition to conducting the postoffice, rims a grocery store. Mrs. Jacob-en Jacob-en places her loss at about $100, and of this amount $75 was in greenbacks green-backs which had been prepared to be forwarded to Salt Lake as stamp money. Mrs. Jacobsen stated that -hp had checked the money Sunday afternoon and intended to forward !t oti the Monday morninig mail. However, when she went to her home he stated, she forgot the greenbacks ond when she went to her store Monday she discovered her loss. In addition to taking the greenbacks green-backs the robbers took four kodaks ind soma films, flashlights, soma lilverware, grape juice, old coins md some family jewelry. Evidently Evident-ly the theives were after money as he store, which is a small one, was 'urned topiy-turvey and goods and ilher articles not wanted were nattered promisuously about the place. Entrance to the store was rained by breaking the government lock, which was used to keep prow-jers prow-jers out of the place. That the parties committing the robberies were traveling in a large car, is now almost a certainty. It was a si range car and the young folks were attracted by a big bundle tied on the rear and covered with canvas. The young folks, too, stated that they passed the postolfice, but did not se! and lights and it is believed that the theives were I hen at work, but went under cover when the young people approached. Larsen, postmaster at Sterling, estimates his loss as near as can be made, at about $140. Stamps and money comprised the loot at the Sterling postoffice. An examination of the tracks levealed the same tread and Postmaster Post-master Larsen is confident that his were' the same as those' that robbed the Axtell postoftice. The losses sustained at Loa ana Aurora have not been learned as yet, but In as much as the offices are second sec-ond class it is no believed that it will be very heavy. Local officers, the county sheriff and city marshal are urging citizens to guard their homes more closely. The wave of roberies, which is sweeping over the country and which has hit Southern Utah by the late, postoffice robberies, is causing considerable con-siderable alarm and if citizens will help safeguard their homes, it is 'believed 'be-lieved that it can be reduced to a minimum.- Gunnison Valley News. |
