Show PETAIN IS NOW A MARSHAL. Fitting Honor for Commander-in-Chief of French Armies. I'aris. General 1'etain. the cotn-niander-in-chief of the French armies, has been named a marshal of France at a meeting of the French cabinet presided pre-sided over by President Poincare. The raising of 1'etain to the rank of marshal will increase Mie number of marshals of France to three, the others being Marshal .lofi're and Marshal Koch. General 1'etain. formerly chief of the general staff, was, on May 1.1, 1017. appointed commander-in-chief of the French armies operaitng on the French front, which command he has since held, while Marshal Foch. as generalissimo, commanded the French and other allied armies throughout the field of operations. |
