Multitudes Cheer American Flyers and Soldiers in French Army and Rejoice Over Stand Americans Have Taken in World Conflict. Paris. To the boom of twenty-one guns the Stars and Stripes were flung to the breeze from the Eiffel tower at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, ushering in city-wide festivities and ceremonies that rallied the citizens of the flag-bedecked flag-bedecked French capital to a memorable mem-orable celebration of "United States day." At the same hour the star-spangled banner and the tri-color of the French republic were sent fluttering from the masts atop the residence of United States Ambassador William G. Sharp, as well as on the American embassy, the city hall and all other public buildings build-ings in Paris. Most notable of the many ceremonies were those In front of the equestrian statue of Washington on the Place d'lena, whither Ambassador Sharp proceeded, pro-ceeded, followed by a cheering multitude, multi-tude, after a short reception at Mr. Sharp's residence. Mile. Nina May, star of the Opera Comique, sang the "Star-Spangled Banner," and Jean Note of the opera gave a thrilling rendition ren-dition of the "Marseillaise." Preceded by a guard of honor consisting con-sisting of American fliers and soldiers in the French army and veterans of the Marne, the party then marched to the Tuileries garden, halting in front of the Lafayette statue. Here, as at the foot of the Washington statue, a bronze palm was deposited. Later the municipal council and other oth-er notables received the American ambassador am-bassador and his escort at the city hall. . |
