Show PEOPLE RESPONDING RESPOND-ING TO THE CALL OF GOVERNMENT The local Conservation Committee desires to express gratification for the splendid way in which the people of Mount Pleasant are responding to the call of the Government through the Department of Agriculture for the production of food products during dur-ing the year. . A survey conducted by the committee com-mittee shows that many lots hitherto idle within the City and considerable land not put to its full productive capacity heretofore are being better taken care of this year. Mount Pleasant's condition in the matter of seed supply is gratifying. Although there is an apparant shortage in the supply of seed potatoes, there is a surplus of all other seeds. Notwithstanding the better mse of lots within the city there remains much property not used. It is to be hoped that this will yet receive attention. at-tention. There seems to be some dif. Acuity In getting plowing done. It Is to be hoped that neighbors having teams will help where good can be done in this way. In the matter of the potato situation situ-ation the committeeecommends the planting of all potatoes suitable for seed even though it means denial of that product for food for the time. The committee has promise of a supply sup-ply of seed potatoes to be shipped in at a reasonable price but feels that it is proper to appeal to the people who have potatoes locally to see that the potatoes in their possession are planted either by themselves or others oth-ers and not sold for food. It is to be hoped also that the duty we all owe humanity at this time will induce in-duce them to part with their surplus sur-plus at a price that can be reached by the wouldbe planter. It has been estimated that if the entire quantity of potatoes in this country be planted .at this time the crop will hardly be normal and as the East can not obtain the necessary fertilizers the burden of potato production pro-duction will fall .upon the West. Let Utah people do their best in this matter. mat-ter. We have been cautioned along this line to use greatest care in the selection selec-tion and treatment of seed potatoes as well as other seed against disease. It is useless to plant if we do not reap, and especially this year there should be no preventable failures, but every acre planted should be made to yield a good crop. In planting gardens the Committee desires to urge more planting of non-perishable non-perishable products. Beans, onions, corn, and the like will keep into win. ter after radishes and lettuce have passed away. Corn and green beans etc., may be canned and so contribute to the food supply throughout the entire year. A committee of women is being organized or-ganized to take up especially the domestic do-mestic side of the problem of conserv. atlon. It is to be hoped that the good people of the community will respond to the suggestions of this committee and aid not only in the production of food but in its conservation. There should be nothing of food value go to waste in our community. In the matter of live stock we are advised that young animals calves, spring chickens, and lambs should not be consumed for feed but made to grow to maturity. Breeding animals should not be disposed of and the range should be used to the best advantage. ad-vantage. With increasing prices on horses there is danger of selling so low that there will not remain power . to do the work of the farms. This condition already exists in some parts of this state. Due to the shortage of hay the horses are unable to do the ' work of the farms as they should. Diseases of animals should be treated , and reported that our animals may ; not be lo9t from this cause. Care : Bhould be taken against bloat in cat-I cat-I tie. . There must be no cessation In the strenuous efforts being put forth in , the duty that rests upon us. It shcmld 3 not bo a time of selfishness. All j should work together for the good of !j ' all. The committee will be pleased '. to serve in whatever way they can. t) Let everyone feel that it is his problem prob-lem to do all he can for himself and othors. |
