Show i HOW TO LIVE j I Common Sens Comments on Health, Happiness and Longevity j By GEORGE F. BUTLER, A, M., M. D. 'I Copyright by Inlaraauoaal Press Bureau j FEAR. The chief fears which lower the vitality vi-tality and Invite disease are the fear of ill health, the fear of misfortune or bereavement and of loss of money or position. But should sickness, bereavement be-reavement or adversity .come to you, face the facts courageously, catching the spirit of the ancient song, "I Will Fear No Evil, for Thou Art With Me." Do not fear anything. Every morning when you awake repeat the words of this song, until the strength of them is felt in your ruiud and body. "In quietness and. in confidence shall be my strength." Begin each day with these promises uttered aloud with confident con-fident assurance and again each night as you prepare for sleep and you will be surprised how much easier your days will be and how more restful will be your nights. The habit of serious, resolute, trustful meditation upon these divine assurances, once formed and held, works Its own marvels. The verifiable results of such a practice upon health, upon mental adequacy, upon character, delicate and imperceptible imper-ceptible though they seem at first, are increasingly registered upon the life within until they utter themselves in an enlarged and well-framed efficiency effi-ciency for all life's tasks. This is what the psalmist said he was perfectly aware of the fact that life would not be all green pastures and still waters; he would be compelled to walk In and tnrough the valley of many a shadow, but come what might, still he would not fear nor be afraid. The man whose inmost soul Is filled with and possessed by such thoughts finds himself him-self strongly fortified against the encroachments en-croachments of disease. According to your faith, your openness, open-ness, your willingness, your capacity, be it unto you. If every one could form the habit of going about with the words "I will be well ! I will be well I I will fear no evli, for Thou art with me ! I will fear no evil for Thou art with me !" on his lips, In his mind and deeply embedded in his heart, I do not say It would enable him to He down with rattlesnakes or to drink water full of typhoid germs unharmed, un-harmed, but it would ndd greatly to his prospects of good health. Pitch your expectation high look for the best, hope for the best, strive for the best, and according to your faith be it unto you. If you will say these words resolutely and keep on saying them trustfully, hopefully, that very action of your inner life will work wonders. I do not say that no disease can stand before you, for you are not omnipotent, but I do say that you will set in operation one of the great healing heal-ing forces nf (he world. Fear of disease dis-ease and death Is normal ; but to allow al-low the mind to dwell on these things Is to become a hypochondriac. To shrink from pain Is as natural as hunger, hun-ger, and as necessary for. the preservation preserva-tion of the race ; but to be a slave to suffering Is to be a nervous wreck. Stop talking about your Ills, stop thinking think-ing about them, stop pitying yourself, fix your eyes on something ldgh, fine, useful, he unafraid, and say bravely and steadily I will be well ! I will ! I will ! I will fear no evil I You will be helped becnuse then you will be In tune with the infinite your desires and determination will be linked with the purpose of God ft)r you. We are put Into this world with a clean way-bill to another port than this. Across the ocean of life our way lies straight to the harbor of eternity. We are freighted with a consignment which is bound to be delivered sooner or later at the Master's wharf. Let us be alert, then, to recognize the seriousness seri-ousness of our destinies, and content ourselves no longer with shallow soundings. Look to It that your ship Is In good order, then spread the sails, weigh the anchor, and point the prow fearlessly and trustfully for the country coun-try that lies on the other side of the restless sea. Sooner or Inter, the voyage voy-age must be made. Let us make It, then, hopefully, courageously, uncomplainingly, uncom-plainingly, with a resolute will at the wheel, and the great God himself to furnish the chart. Then shall we weather the wildest gales, and find entrance at last to the Harbor of Peace. LEARN HOW TO LIVE ! . CLEANLINESS Cleanliness is next to godliness, but it takes many godly people a long time to "get next." All know that emanations emana-tions are constantly passing from the body, its impurities, its deadly waste matter, which nature has no use for and which she is constantly trying to pass off by the pores of the skin. The average number of these for ench square inch of the body is estimated to be two thousand and five hundred, or seven millions In all, making if joined together, a canal 2S miles long, which conducts from the system every twenty-four hours in the state of sensible sen-sible perspiration, or water called "sweat," or Insensible perspiration called call-ed "vapor," three pounds and a half from one person In the ordinary occupations oc-cupations of life, and much more to extraordinary ex-traordinary callings. The sensible perspiration from a sleeper during the night is enough to bathe the atmosphere of a whole room ;. and it is the breathing and re-breathlng re-breathlng of an atmosphere thus con taminated which makes the night tne time of attack of the great majority of violent human ailments ; it is this which fires the train of Impending disease dis-ease and which might have been deferred, de-ferred, if not entirely warded off if the sleepers and the bedchamber had been clean. In addition to the excretion of unclean or poisonous waste matter from the body, there may be deposited on the hands and other portions of the body disease germs which may endanger endan-ger health. Food is frequently contaminated con-taminated by disease germs from the unclean hands of people. No one who is sick with an infectious disease or who Is just recovering from such a disease dis-ease should have anything to do with the handling or the preparation of foods. Tainted foods aiv worse than tainted money. It Is necessary to health to keep the skin clean by a daily bath. It is unnecessary to use soap every time save on exposed parts of the body. Water is even more essential to the inside of a man than to the outside. Water constitutes more than one fourth of the bulk of the boSy, and all the functions of life are really carried car-ried on in a water bath ; and, although the sense of thirst may be trusted to call for a glass of water when required, re-quired, the fluid "can be drunk most advantageously for many reasons besides be-sides mere satisfying of thirst. Digestion Di-gestion is much facilitated by drinking water; and there is no good reason why you should not drink water with meals as well as between meals. The habit of drinking water in moderate quantities between meals contributes to health, and indicates the fact that those who visit resorts for the purpose of drinking the waters of mineral springs might profit by staying at home and drinking more water. When water is taken into an empty stomach It quickly passes Into the circulation to liquify solids, whose excretion from the system is thus facilitated. Very few people think of the necessity of washing the inside as well as the outside out-side of the body, and he who would be perfectly healthy should be as careful about the cleanliness of his stomach and bowels as of his skin. "Clean out, clean up, and keep clean !" Tt Is so easy to obey the laws of health! You should revere your body, revere It in deeds, not sentiment alone. Warm It with good food. Ventilate It with fresh air. Cleanse It with hearty exercise and dally baths. LEARN HOW TO LIVE. |
