Show Early Suffragette. Militant minded women were known in England before the suffragettes, one of whom lies in Henry VII. 's chapel chap-el Margaret, countess of Richmond, its builder's mother, with her brass effigy by Torrigiano. She hated the Turk, and she made, as Camden reports, re-ports, a sporting offer to the chivalrous chival-rous of her day: "On the condition that princes of Christendom would combine themselves and march against the common enemy, the Turk, she would most willingly attend them and be their laundress in camp." That position of laundress to the crusaders would have been an easy one, for it was the fashion to make vows to change no underclothing until the holy sepulcher was regained. |
