Show Whirlpool Suggested Silencer. ' Mr. Maxim had been working on the development of automobile mufflers muf-flers for some time before he thought' of a silencer in connection with a gun. In addition to this was the inventor's in-ventor's desire to enjoy target practice prac-tice without creating a disturbance. Experiment ensued, covering a couple of years and all kinds of valves, vents, by-passes, expansion chambers, etc., but without success. One morning after his bath the inventor noticed the small whirlpool over the drain hole, the, action of which retards the egress of the water. It does not silence si-lence it (as this phenomenon is usually usu-ally accompanied by a more or less pronounced sucking sound), but in a gun the noise of firing is caused by the sudden egress of the gases, and if these could in the same way be slowed slow-ed down the noise would in proportion be decreased. Acting on this suggestion, sugges-tion, a little tube was then made, constructed con-structed so as to induce a whirlpool in the escaping gases frm the gun. This, when tried, was a success.
