Show RAIDERS ATTACK BORIB PATROL ONE SOLDIER KILLED AND OFFICER OFFI-CER WOUNDED IN AN ENCOUNTER ENCOUN-TER WITH MEXICANS. Several Hundred Mexicans Fire Across Rio Grande Upon Cavalry Troop to Cover Retreat of Band of Looters From Mexico. Washington. Details of a fight between be-tween United States cavalry men and Mexican raiders at Progreso, Texas, on Friday, in which an American trooper was killed and the captain commanding wounded, were given in a report from Major Anderson at Mercedes, forwarded to the war department de-partment by Major General Funston. After looting the Progreso postof-fice postof-fice and store, which they burned, the raiders escaped across the Rio Grande under the cover of rifle fire from several sev-eral hundred Mexicans on the south side of the river. The report was telegraphed to Secretary Sec-retary Garrison at Seabright, N. J., by Assistant Secretary Ereckenridge. Department De-partment officials would not comment in the absence of the secretary, but it was made apparent that the incident was regarded as one of the most serious se-rious of the many disturbances along the border. No new orders have been given General Gen-eral Funston. He is in full charge of the border situation and is authorized to deal with emergencies as may be necessary. Repetition of such affairs as that of Friday may be followed by American troops crossing the border to deal with escaping raiders and their accomplices. |
