Shipments of gold to the United States since the beginnuu of the European war, in conjunction with the domestic production, brought the total of gold in the country from $1,887,370,664 on August 1, 1914, to $2,636,009,564 on October 1, 1916, the gain in the amount in the twenty-six months' period being $748,739,904, according ac-cording to a compilation announced here. The amount of gold imported during dur-ing the war, it is pointed out, is greater than that for the full decade preceding the war, and the imports for June, 1916, were greater than in any ful year prior to the war, with the single exception of 1908. The gold in the United States is now double that of 1904 and 40 per cent more than at the beginning of the war, it is said. |
