Show Will the City Council g'ive a franchiKo to the Mountain States Telephone Co., or to a local company of our citizens or wiil the city take over the business when the present franchise shall expire in about eighteen months from now. These questions are being discussed nt the present time. If the city could raise the money necessary to put the sys-temin sys-temin first class shape and operate it, that would In our opinion be the very best thing that could be done at the present time. But if this can not be done, then the franchise fran-chise should either be continued to the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company or a local company be encouraged to take hold of the proposition. It is no doubt a good investment; it has proven so in other cities. That is wanted is a larger number of phones taken, a lower rate, and an improved service; and we believe with good management man-agement all this can be realized. A phone in a business place or in a house is only valuable in proportion to the number of phones taken within the circuit cir-cuit of its operation. The Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company proposes to put the system here in first class shape, so it will give the people better service, and for this pn-'pose will expend from twelve to fifteen thousand dollars, and leave the rates as they now are. "With this understanding or pledge, they ask for a renewal of the franchise at the expiration ex-piration of the present one. We hope that that which will be most advantageous to the general public will be done. |
