Christen sen and Obed Nelson met at the Elite Banquet Hall in Mount Pleasant Saturday Sat-urday evening at regular appointed time for the Commercial Club to convene. con-vene. Bent R. Hansen, president of the Commercial Club, presiding during dur-ing the meeting. The gentlemen from Fairview came here to discuss matters relative to the Cottonwood road. They presented present-ed a proposition to the Commercial club and gentlemen present in which the purchase price of the road was apportioned out to the various towns of the North end of the county in proportion pro-portion to the benefits each town may receive from the road. Swen O. Neil-son Neil-son said that the county had assumed assum-ed two-thirds of the expense and that the remaining one-third would be apportioned ap-portioned out among the towns in North Sanpete. He stated that Fair-view Fair-view would assume the greater portion por-tion of the amount. Their portion being about $600. Mt. Pleasant Is expected to contribute $300; Fountain Foun-tain Green about $175 and Moroni and Spring City about $150. Mayor John L. Bench of Fairview thanked the people of Mount Pleasant for their loyal support to them in so many things making special mention men-tion of F. C. Jensen, John H. Seely, W. D. Candland, J. C. Jordan and James Larsen, and he believed that Mt. Pleasant would be with them in many more things of importance. He called attention to the many advantages advan-tages and opportunities which this road afforded the people. He also mentioned the pleasures of fishing in the mountains in that section. Mayor May-or Bench said that the State Road Commission had designated the road as a state highway down through Huntington canyon to the coal mines. He also mentioned the fact that when a good road has been made to the coal mines ft would not be a difficult task to get a good road from there to the coal fields at Clear Creek and Winterquarters. This would be a big advantage to farmers who desire to market their farm products at the eastern camps. At present, he said, only about five per cent of the farm products consumed in those camps came from Sanpete county while 95 per cent was shipped in form Utah county which is a much greater haul. Much of this trade can be brought to Sanpete as soon as a good road is built across the mountain. L. P. Brady stated that there was $10,000 available money to be spent in this county during the current year and that there was $3500 due from automobile licenses. A general discussion followed. F. C. Jensen asked when they expected ex-pected to build the road. Swen O. Nielson stated that Richard R. Lyman Ly-man thought that $3500 could be spent on the Cottonwood road this year. J. C. Jordan suggested that if the automobile licenses were due for this purpose that the County Sheriff look up last year's back due accounts. F. C. Jensen proposed that the $3500 available for this road work be used at once. Swen O. Neilson was willing to adopt that plan but he stated that the State Road Commission has that matter to handle. Mr. Jensen again took the floor and related that he had recently held interviews with Salt Lake parties who were desirous of coming out here to enjoy vacation trips in the mountains and It was his desire to have the road finished at once. He proposed securing $0000 or $7000 and finishing the road this year jnst as soon as it could be done and reap the benefits of a good road right from the start. It was suggested by Swen O. Neil-sen Neil-sen that a committee be selected from Mount Pleasant and Fairview to meet with the state officials at the dedication dedi-cation of the State Capitol on June 2 6. The committee selected were N. S. Neilson, F. C. Jensen, W. D. Candland and John H. Seely. As Swen O. Neilson and Chas. Peacock Pea-cock of Fairview had assumed the obligations and paid the one-third of the cost of the road out of their personal accounts the matter of re-embursing re-embursing them was taken up by the meeting and they expect other citizens citi-zens of the town to make up the remaining re-maining $175 which is expected of Mount P-leasant. John H. Seely, though absent at the time, heartily approved of the movement of the meeting. Upon inquiry of H. C. Beaumann Commissioner Brady informed the meeting that a man had been employed em-ployed by the county to keep the road in repairs and was now on the job. Mr. Beaumann proposed to get the two eastern counties to cooperate with us In the road movement across' the mountains. N. S. Neilson called, the attention of the meeting to the many benefits which Sanpete county may receive by having a good road leading direct to Schofield. Mr. Neilson was very emphatic em-phatic in his statements and he stated stat-ed that North Sanpete was entitled to a good portion of the funds appropriated ap-propriated for road building. He said thftt South Sanpete had taken much more than their share of the money, and he handled Ephraim very rough, ly for iusing our money to pave their streets. He said that we ought to go after them and make them ashamed asham-ed of themselves, even taking the matter into court if necessary. At the close of the meeting Swen O. Neilson of Fairview thanked the people of Mount Pleasant for the support sup-port which they had given to Fair-view Fair-view and the road movement. |
