Show Makes Music In Early Spring. Many take It for granted that the. early frog songs of spring are sung by the handsome big green fellows which are common throughout the summer. There scarcely could be a. graver mistake. The common leopard frog does sing In the early spring, but Its note Is a dull and throaty rumble. The real chorister of the newly thawed ponds Is hyla plckeriugii. a mottled brown mlto scarcely an Inch in length. The marvel is that so tiny a singer can make so much noise. Pickering's hyla Is the most timid of frogs, and only the very persiEtent searchers can get a glimpse of It. On the remote approach ap-proach of a human observer the tiny tinger becomes silent and slips to tha invisible depths of Its chosen rool. It Is extremely canny and wary. It really is not worth seeing, anyway. But it is well worth hearing. |
