SIXTEEN DIE fN WRECK. Steamer Strikes Shoal and is Pounded to Pc5. Marshfield, ' Ore. The passenger steamer Santa Clara, bound from Portland Port-land to San Francisco, was wrecked late Tuesday on the south spit at the entrance of Coos bay, 170 miles south of Astoria, Ore., and sixteen persons are known to be dead. Several are missing and it is believed the loss will total twentyfive. The Santa Clara is believed to have struck a shoal entering Coos bay. She carried forty-eight passengers and a crew of twenty-four when she left Portland Monday morning.
