Show 1 News From Around Utah Low Consumption Oi Cigaiets In Beehive State Utah ranked third from the bottom in per capita consumption consump-tion of cigarets. The per capita consumption of cigarets in Utah averaged 1,340. The two states that ranked lower than Utah were Oklahoma 1,336 and Arkansas Ar-kansas with 1,070 per capita. These two states have a high rate of tax per package, five and six cents respectively which causes many of their consumers to order cigarets by mail from firms in states that are tax free. Per capita consumption in other western states levying taxes on cigarets was: Montana, 2,960: New Mexico, 2,060; Arizona, Ari-zona, 2,570; Washington, 2,060 and Nevada (highest in the nation) na-tion) 4,140. According to the survey, Utah's 2c per pack tax rate was not excessive compared with other states. One state has a lc rate; eleven have 2c; one has 2ic; seventeen have 3c; five have '4c; three have 5c and one 6c per pack. Utah Gains in Coal Output Utah is a very important state in the production of coal and in coal reserves already located and surveyed. In Utah during the vear of 1947 19,406,000 tons of coal were mined. This amount was 4,000,-000 4,000,-000 tons more than was mined during 1946 and far ahead of the 1920-1924 average which amounted to 10,363,000 tons. In spite of the fact that there are extensive deposits of bituminous bitumi-nous coal in the west, the fact still remains that 935- of the production takes place east of the Missls5.-ippi River. Natural- i ly the production takes place where the population and industry indus-try is located. During the past recent years there has been a shift in population to the west, and this is indicated in the recent re-cent increased production of coal. Utah ranks fourth in the na- tion in the original coal reserves re-serves of bituminous coal. As of January 1, 194S, 99.8rr of Utah's reserve is still . intact which would indicate very little of our coal possibilities have as yet been touched. Utah's total reserves of easily mined coal amount to 93,154,100,000 tons. - Greatest Attractions In National Parks Located in West The two greatest public recreational recre-ational attractions in. the National Na-tional Parks supervision are to man made lakes Lake Mead in Nevada and Arizona - and Lake Texoma in.
