Show SCS Is Designated As Defense Agency Soil Conservation Service has jeen designated as a defense agency, according to word received re-ceived at Albuquerque today oy Ilu.h G. Calkins, regional conservator. con-servator. The designation was made effective ef-fective February 17, Calkins said. This follows action taken four months ago setting up the cartographic carto-graphic and land utilization divisions di-visions of SCS as defense units within the service. Present action, ac-tion, however, throws the entire forces of this conservation agency into recognition as performing a defense function. Beyond the fact that conservation conserva-tion of natural resources is recognized rec-ognized as an integral part of the program of total defense, tne conservator pointed out that existing ex-isting facilities in the SCS can be utilized to meet specific needs of .he defense program. Among these facilities such aotivit es as land surveys, mapping, mapp-ing, engineering, transportation and construction, climate and weal her studies, land management manage-ment and information were cited as being available for defense purposes if needed. Through its close relationship wilii moii' than '100 soil consei-vation consei-vation districts in the nation and the 25,000 CCC enrollees working under SCS supervision, the service serv-ice is further enabled to function in defense activities, Calkins said. |
