Show Selected Thoughts. j . Fraucp, the tyrant dictator of Spain, says that the rise of I'ascism bus killed Liberalism in the world. You may judge how mistaken he is when you know that near him in England there is being proposed, and supported bv the London Times, j the ;most advanced Liberalism? It means government of , by and for the people all the people, with such advances as have been won in this country and now proposed in England; , plenty and security for all; the equalization of wealth; the ; poor enjoying many of the things hitherto enjoyed only by j ther.ch. And what does Fascism mean? It means tyrany by I he ruling few and slavery for the many a slavery as cruel - : "M(l abjeot as any ever known. It moans heaped up wealth and ' l ixury for 'he few and clire poverty for the many. Spain is today a.purfpct example of Fascism in operation and control. The few .revel in luxury in the larger cities while there is the lowest degree of poverty among all he masses. A million are in concentration camps None of the ruling class exercise any charity or mercy or helpfulness for the suffering, having no interest in-terest in them save to wring from 'hen forced labor and taxes and drive them to war. It is the shameof the world. Beware! We wonder if ve may be pardoned for calling them murderer's mur-derer's row, the little group of wilful and soulless men who, after the World War 1, influenced the United States Senate ! to deieat the country's entrance into the League of Nations. We hope so. They, more than any other thing, are respons : ible for the present war and will have to answer at the eternal judgment bar for their wicked folly. Because of them the United States surely has a heavy weight resting on its conscience. What nation was it that being powerful enough to save it, remained out of the League? It was the United States, What nation was it that held back j with such fearful reluctancy from the world court? It was the United States. What nation was it that laughed down the possibility of war coming to it from abroad? It was the Unit-j Unit-j ed States. W hat nation was it that passed one of the most stupid and vicious tariff laws and built impassable barriers to" , prevent economic recovery? The United States. God forb'd that this nation should again be given over to the square heads : ot reaction and isolation. If it is, then its civilization will ! melt away like dew before the sun. The Stranger who once lived in Galilee would be as much of a stranger in the Pagan world of today as he was in the Pagan Pa-gan world of his day. Many of the upper classes would look upon him much as they did then. Today Paganism flaunts its doctrine of hate, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, with as much cunning and cruelty as anciently. They believe : in ffrceaiid conquest, revenge, torture, starving and uprooting whole communities and states. It would be one of the great- ' est miracles of all time if the doctrine of love and the Golden Rule were suddenly to take root among the conquering hordes. "Love one another," is about as alien to their hearts as it was ,when the people sat and watched the hungry lioua devour the Christians in Rome. If Jesus came into their midst today they would say somewhat as follows, and this is not at all far fetched. "He is a fool who does not know better than to de-: de-: nounce our philosophers and Scribes and Pharises. How rid- j iculous are his silly doctrines. Why, he is only an upstart, a mere strippiing, the son of a poor, obscure carpenter. He thinks he knows more than the doctors and chief priests in the temple. What preposterous ideas. To love our enemies. To love a person who is tryinar to injure you. To treat all men as equals. Its absurd. See how he cheated our liquor vendors vend-ors of profit when he made water into wine. How he depri ved our business men the privilege of exploiting the people whf-n he made loaves and fishes to feed the multitude. He will ruin our money system, take away our usury because he j refuses to use or touch money. He takes their living away from the doctors by healing the sick and lame and blin d. He even takes business away from the undertakers when he raises rais-es thedead. Prophet? Bah!' He's an imposter. Away with him before he carries the people with with. Crucify him." But the world had better pay attention to him because his principles will triumph. They triumphed over Pagan Rome over the Dark Ages, and they will triumph over all that U : wrong oday. He is the ultimate of all things earthly and al1 j things pertaining to the life'of man. He is as much the spirit- : ual light of the world as the'sun is the physical light. Turn to him for the full, complete and true meaning of life, not ' only at Christmas (ime but all the time, i Once upon a time a certain man lived in a basement. He was a lover of flowers. He tried to erow some but each tim e they turned pale, withered and died. Someone told him they needed snnlight. And what a saving difference the sunlight made So it is with the world. Thesaving sunlight of economic econ-omic and spiritual truth has always been here but the leaders of men would not let it be used. They have 'kept humanity in a basement shut away from truth. If only they would use it there could be made such a heaven here on earth that there would be little Deed of any other. This war and condititions in the world are more and more making it so that all the things on which men have set their hearts and ev?n built some of their religion upon, are count ing for less and less. They are beginning to see that property wealth and possessions and rank weigh lightly against such . things as courage, faith, fortitude, honor, decency and a sense ' of the eternal values. Above and beyond the war men must look for and prepare for a world of social justice where all may be free to live and develop and grow to the height of their possibilities. And in that new world all the false gods must d;ssapear. Unless men build upon something different from greed, self-interest, lust for power and gain, they will but upon the shifting sands. The world has been building on these foundations evtr since Nimrod set up his crude capicalism. And that is the reason that the world has always wallowed in sin and poverty and war. |
