Show The Good of WPA There was great rejoicing among the profit takers over the death of W.P.A. Of course, like all things human, it had its faults. But let us look at its virtues and the good that it has done. It employed 8,000,000 persons and ministered in providing food, fuel, clothing andshelter for 30,000,000 dependents. de-pendents. It built 644,000 miles of good roads, 72,000 bridges, 116,000 buildings such as schools, city halls, libraries, hospitals, hospi-tals, policestations, armories, courthouses, museums. It enlarged en-larged or improved 800 air ports, and many other things. That's a fine record. But of course, the great fault with it was that it did not make profits for the rich. Had it done that they would have magnified it to the skies. The set up lasted seven and one-half years and the cost was $10,000,000,000. A lot of money, sure. But today they are spending that much for war every two months. So those who think W.P.A. was expensive might figure the war cost for a like number of years, which would be five hundred billion bil-lion dollars. No one appears to object to that, but to employing, employ-ing, feeding, housing and clothing people, oh my. |
