Show Annua! Chambor of Commerce Banquet Weli Attended; New Directors Are Elected for Year The Pleasant Grove Chamber of Commerce annual banquet and election el-ection of directors held Wednesday evening at the Timpanogos stake house was well attended and the evening's program well received. Cliff Hales, president of the Chamber of Commerce was in charge, with Ford M. Paulson, handling the master of ceremonies duties in a very clever manner. Invocation was offered by President Pres-ident Merrill N. Warnick. President Hales gave an address of welcome, after which a response was made by Mayor Lewis Wells. The musical entertainment for the evening was given by a "Model "Mod-el T" quartet from the Brigham Young University, who rendered a number of songs in a very pleasing pleas-ing and entertaining manner. Eddie Oscarson, delivered a fine address, telling of his experiences in his recent trip to the National Future Fanners Convention in Kansas City. Neils Fugal, gave an excellent talk on the history of Pleasant Grove. The speaker dwelt on the physical part of the development of i.he community from the arrival of (he early pioneers on Sept. 13, 1353, until the present time. One of the highlights of the evening was the awarding of n lifetime membership in the chamber cham-ber of commerce to E. J. Swenson. Swen-son. Mr. Swenson was a charter member of the organization and served on the board many years. The presentation was made by Neil Y. Fugal, director in the organization, or-ganization, and a short word of thanks and appreciation for the honor given him, was made by Mr. Swensen. At this point the time was turned turn-ed over to President Emile Can-ces Can-ces of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Com-merce, who made a presentation from the Jaycees to Fred Keetch for his outstanding work in the Jaycee organization. President Cances stated that Mr. Keetch had served in every local office in the organization. Fred responded, respond-ed, thanking the club for the recognition rec-ognition given him. The guest speaker of the evening even-ing was Alma P. Burton, recently appointed superintendent of the Alpine School District. Superintendent Superin-tendent Burton told his audience that "democracy depends on education." edu-cation." He reviewed the history of America, from the time the Pilgrims landed in this country, and emphasized the part that education edu-cation has played in making Democracy Dem-ocracy a success. He also spent a few minutes discussing the schools in the Alpine District. The tables were beautifully decorated dec-orated in St. Patrick's colors and favors. The dinner was prepared and served by the Elders and their wives of the Grove ward. The new directors elected at the banquet are: two year term: Cliff Hales, Max Harper, and George G. Smith; one year directors: Vernon Ver-non Aliman, Richard Allred and Clarence Rasmussen. From the financial report of the years activities, the Chamber received from sales of memberships, member-ships, $286.00; from liquidation of rodeo association stock, $480.00; From Monte Young's rides and shows, $2,300.00; and from donations dona-tions in lieu of floats, $130.00, added to bank balance Jan 1, 1953 of $1136.83, 'making a total of $4,322.83 to account for. Disbursements were ontribu-tions ontribu-tions of $1900.68, Advertising of $457.45; Queens contest and float, $144.65; Parade, $344.99; Street decorations, $125.00; Stamps, printing prin-ting and supplies, $16.04 and public pub-lic free show and 1953 election and miscellaneous expenses of $227.15, or a total of $3,215.96 for expenses, ex-penses, leaving a total of $1,116.87 in the bank as of Dec. 31, 1953. |
