Show LAS VEGAS This edition of the weekly chore is being written from the south exposure patio of the desert villa of Lorin Ronnow, affluent businessman of this Southern Sou-thern Nevada playground. The aky is an indigo blue, the sun is bright and the temperature stands at an even 75 degrees. Left Battle Creek at 10:30 last Thursday morning after being delivered de-livered to LeRoy Ash's bus station by friend Joyce Jacobs, bags, baggage bag-gage and crutch. The bus, a double decker Greyhound, was 90 minutes min-utes late due to storms in the Wyoming area. These double-decker affairs are an innovation, just to put it mildly. mild-ly. Much of the roof consists of plastic skylights which facilitates observation of the stars and weather weath-er and the side windows provide an unobstructed view of the countryside. coun-tryside. To one who was "brung up on a farm," the swaying motion mo-tion reminds more of a ride atop a load of hay than anything else. Thursday was bright and clear until we reached Beaver Canyon, when as predicted the sky became overcast and began to spit snow. In fact between Beaver City and Parowan we drove through a blinding blind-ing blizzard. We ran through the storm however, how-ever, and by mid-afternoon and the Cedar City rest-stop all was clear again but things were frozen fro-zen up tight. When asked how low the thermometer dropped on Wednesday night, one of the natives na-tives remarked, 'I wouldn't know exactly, but it was d d cold." It's the little things that often tell the biggest story regarding changes for the better in the way we humans treat each other. And this observed change was really heart-warming. After all we read currently about racial hatreds and indignities. A young negro mother and her two little daughters aged about 3 and 4 years were passengers on the bus. When the dinner-stop was made in Nephi, they left the bus, entered the cafe and were served with the same courteous attention received by the rest of us. Three years ago we observed a similar incident at the same cafe, except that in the former episode the negros were a half-dozen sharp looking immaculately gromed U.S. Air Force Cadets. The young servicemen ser-vicemen seated themselves at tables and remained there until the bus driver sounded the "all aboard" signal. Not a waitress had come near them to take an order. They were silently and completely com-pletely snubbed and Ignored. Thank God that people can change. The pros and cons regarding more and better scientific education edu-cation In our schools was pertinently pertin-ently shaped up by a quotation in Friday mornine-'s Las Vegas Sun. Dr. Edward Tiller, father of the H-Bomb, said and I quote, "The American boy who is interested in science should get at least half as . much attentions. ! the boy who is interested In football." So long 'til Thursday. |
