Show Funeral Services For Arnold B, Matthews Will Be Held Saturday In First Ward Chapel i Funoial services for Pfc. Arnold Ar-nold B. (Corky) Matthews. 21. former Pleasant Grove High School football captain, who was killed in action in Korea, will be conducted Saturday at 2 p. m. The services will be held in the Pleasant Grove First ward chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter-day Saints. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Leg-ion Post No. 70, in Pleasant Grove City Cemetery. The body of Pfc. Matthews arrived ar-rived in Pleasant Grove from Korea Thursday night. Friends may call at the Olpin Mortuary Friday from 7 to 9 p. m. and Saturday from noon to 2 p. m. A son of Arnold and Margaret Agar Sutch Matthews, he was born in Rains, Carbon County, April 30, 1930. He attended school there, later moving with his family fam-ily to Pleasant Grove. He was captain of -the Pleasant Grove High School football team and student body president during his senior year. After graduation, he attended Brigham Young University prior to enlisting in the army Jan. 23, 1948, in Provo. In the army, he continued to be active in athletics. He was a member of the Fort Bliss. Texas. Rockets. ami the Fort Lewis, Wash. Rockets. Pfc. Matthews was released from the army after a year's service, but was recalled to active act-ive duty from the Army Reserve Corps Aug. 23, 1950. He was transferred tran-sferred into the 204th Field Artillery, Art-illery, a Utah National Guard Battalion, and went overseas on January 1, 1951. He has been in -combat with Eattery C, of the 204th at Pusan, and, according to a letter written writ-ten home June 5, had been in combat near the 38th parallel. He was killed June 8th. He had received two battle stars and the purple heart. " Surviving include his parents, and one brother, Gene Matthews, Pleasant Grove; a half-brother, James C. Matthews, Charleston, W. Va., and two grandparents, Oliver Sutch, Provo and Mrs. W. E. Shambelen, West Virginia. |
