I (Editor's Note: This is the fifth of a series of eight articles on the history and reTival of the San Francisco Mining region. re-gion. Beaver, County, Utah. j Although the San Francisco Mining district was organized 'August 12, 1871, a little more than a year after the Star district in ithe same county, activity lagged 'until the discovery of the Horn iSilver mine. i Stimulated by the discovery of ithis mine, prospectors swarmed the hills and many claims were located , in the San Francisco and other 'mining districts of Beaver County. The Beaver Carbonate, the Shaun-,tie, Shaun-,tie, Shenandoah, City, Elephant City, South Camp, Moscow, Hickory, Hick-ory, Red Cloud and others were brought into production. But none rivaled the Horn Silver. It is interesting to note that ons of the first recovery fumances in Utah was built at Minersville, Beaver County, not far from the San Francisco district. Isaac Grund, in cooperation with others, built a crude recovery plant at Minersville in 1858. This was neai the Lincoln mine which was discovered dis-covered and produced lead ore aa early as 1852. Lead was in demand then as, like all frontiers, som trouble was experienced with Indians In-dians and the metal was needed foi the production of bullets. "According to accounts," says jnc writer, something in the leac at the Lincoln mine made it tot hard for bullets. That somethinj, was later found to be silver." The sixth article in this series wil.' appear soon in these columns. |
