Show mewl SOeaues Lin) HnjDBasDra A multi-million dollar expansion expan-sion program, to increase the ' annual steel producting capacity of Geneva Steel plant from 1,400,000 to 1,560,000 net tons (about 11), was annuonced on Wednesday by Dr. Walther Mathesius, presiednt of Geneva Steel Co., a U. S. Steel Corp. subsidiary. Estimated cost of the new facilities to be installed at the Utah plant, according to figures furnished by the corporation to government officials in Washington, Washing-ton, is $4,263,000. Dr. Mathesius said work on the additional facilities will be started promptly and that they will be completed in approximtely one year. The expansion, he explained, ex-plained, will enable Geneva to meet more fully the need for additional ad-ditional steel both for national defense and essential civilian purposes. pur-poses. The principal additional facilities facili-ties to be constructed are: One new open hearth steel furnace fur-nace with auxiliaries. This will bring the total number of open hearth furnaces at the plant to 10. Two overhead traveling cranes. One two-hole soaking pit furnaces, fur-naces, bringing the total at the plant to 16. Necessary building extensions and additional material storage facilities. The 160,000 net tons which the additions will add' to the plant's annual productive capacity a-mounts a-mounts to slightly more than 11 per cent.
