Show Open Letter To Pi. Grove City Officials Mayor and City Council of Pleasant Grove: Dear Gentlemen: We were surprized to read in the Pleasant Grove Reri-iw in the issue of October 22, 1948 that you had granted licenses to sell beer in Pleasant Grove on Sundays. We were even more surprised at the reason you gave for doing so; that is, "because they were doing it in other communities the City Council felt that cafe and beer tavern owners own-ers were entitled to have the same opportunity for business as elsewhere." else-where." Pleasant Grove has always been noted for its high ideals and high standards. A great number of educational ed-ucational leaders have come from Pleasant Grove. It seems to us that decisions of so great consequence con-sequence should be based on principle prin-ciple envolved and on possible consequence con-sequence to the people whom the council have been elected to serve. Must the standards of the people of Pleasant Grove become secondary second-ary to the desire of two or three citizens who place the profit from the sale of a few glasses of beer above the good of the people? If people want to buy or sell beer there are plenty of places it can be done without Pleasant Grove lowering its standards. Months ago the City Council was petitioned to abolish the pin ball machines and gambling devices, but nothing has been done about it. The Grand Jury in Salt Lake County Coun-ty declared them unlawful and confiscated them and most every county attorney has declared them unlawful, yet, you have done nothing noth-ing about it. Do you realize the position you would be in if a Grand Jury was called in Utah County and it was found that you had allowed these gambling devices to run against the law and the peoples petition? Surely you didn't give these things very serious study and we urge that you reconsider your action act-ion and that you don't grant these kind of, licenses. We are sure that the big majority of Pleasant Grove citizens agree with us on this. Respectfully yours, Merrill N. Warnick Vilace L. Radmall Lewis E. Olpin Timpanogos Stake Presidency |
