Show The Home Town Paper Shall Not Die Says Iowa Town Group The business men and citizens of Walcott, Iowa, town of 500 population, popula-tion, showed how highly they value a community newspaper when the publisher of the Scott County Tribune Trib-une was called suddenly into the army. Not having time to get anyone any-one to assume the duties of continuing continu-ing the publication, this publisher announced to his subscribers and advertisers that the Tribune would be suspended during the war. The next week.however, the Tribune Trib-une appeared as usual- And it carried car-ried an announcement that the merchants and business men of the town had leased the paper and would continue its publication in the absence of the publisher. The Walcott business men could not afford to let the newspaper die With Its death, they knew, their own business life would come to an end And the swan song of the community communi-ty newspaper would also be the dirge for Walcott. Newspaper advertising has become be-come indispensable In the distribution distribu-tion of merchandise and in the promotion pro-motion of all types of service. Newspaper News-paper advertising not only carries the merchant's sales talk to the buyers of his trade territory, but it also educates the consumer in the wise satisfaction of his wants. Through newspaper advertising men ' and women discover needs they had not previously recognized, and in this manner business is expanded and human existence made more pleasing. The community newspaper is one of the prime sources of historical ' data, information which grows more important with tire passing of the years. Through the columns of the little home-town paer, residents of a community obtain reports of births, marriages, deaths, and the countless week-to-week happenings that are not published by the big metropolitan newspapers. In this respect, it renders a service that can be obtained in no other manner. These are some of the reasons why the business men of Walcott are digging down into their pockets and devoting much of their time these days to perpetuating the work of the Scott County Tribune.
