Show Airport Problem Yet Unsolved The local Airport Committees have been plugging away since last September, blowing first hot and then cold. At one time, Orem, Pleasant Grove, and American Fork were (so they hoped) all set for a big Class Three Airport. Orem withdrew, and is now attempting at-tempting a field of their own. Here are a few figures that explains ex-plains the need for an airport. In 1940 there were two private flying schools iin Utah and now there are fifty-four all swamped with business. bus-iness. Over a million dollar business bus-iness was done by Provo Airport last year, and at least $50,000 of that came out of this area. We have nine applications to start flying schools just as soon as a runway is laid. With airfreight just coming of age, an airport at this time will be a fruitful investment, especially when Federal and State funds are available to the tune of 91c to our 9c on the dollar. Study the problem for yourself with a doubling of population anticipated by "51", are we preparing adequately for our share in the future? Last year 12,000 pilots landed in. Salt Lake City that were just tourists sightseeing, sight-seeing, and all complained about being unable to land except at large cities in Utah. Take sides on this airport issue if you feel it is needed and boost Jt,Tjme is of the essence now. Federal Fed-eral money has already been appropriated ap-propriated for this Pleasant Grove-American Grove-American Fork Airport and after this year we may not have Federal funds available. The American Fork Mayor and Council stand ready to commit American Fork for their half of costs just as soon as Pleasant Grove decides to go. |
