Show State Plants ; Silver Salmon Again Good news for Strawberry and Scofield reservoir fishermen was forthcoming today from the Utah fish and game department whrcrrTrported-4 had received 200,000 sockeye salmon eggs from the Idaho hatchery at Sandpoint. The eggs have been taken to the Midway hatchery and are reported re-ported by Dave Wright,. Midway superintendent, to be in excellent condition. The shipment marks the firt time since 1940 that Utah has been able to obtain any of these scrapping game fish, M. J. Mad-sen, Mad-sen, superintendent of fisheries, announced. The 1940 shipment also was planted in Strawberry and Scofield. They provided fine fishing in Strawberry, but an unfortunate un-fortunate suffocation occurred in Scofield which virtually wiped out the game fish population. Noted for their fighting ability when taken on spinners or other "artificial lures, the sockeyes will attain a weight of about three pounds during their second summer sum-mer on the basis of past Utah reports. Unfortunately, a long-range long-range planting program cannot be figured on, since the sockeye will not spawn unless it has access ac-cess to the sea. Average life of the fish is between five and seven years. ' "With the increase in fishing pressure common throughout Utah, I don't think we will have to worry about any of these fish succumbing to old age," Madsen asserted. "I give them four years at the rrvt." |
