Show Plant Peach Trees The following article is written with the hupe that it may be helpful to some of our peach growers and a gentle reminder to all interested. There is no bigger problem confronting con-fronting Pleasant Grove peach growers grow-ers today than that of putting their peach orchards into condition so that satisfactory methods of pest control can be put into operation. Now- is the time each tree should be pruned so that all parts of it can be readily reached with a spray machine. Old, infested and dead trees should be removed re-moved from' the orchard as soon as weather conditions will permit. Careful Care-ful sanitation must be practiced, such as the cleaning up and burning of dead limbs, weeds, and other waste material. We cannot expect to reap any financial gain from our peach trees unless more attention is given to the peach industry in and around Pleasant Grove. Because of special attention in careful pruning, thinning, and thorough thor-ough spraying, Provo Bench -district led Utah county by far in number of cars of peaches shipped- last year. The quality of their peaches was the best for many years well colored, well formed, free from gum and worm injury. Buyers were not slow in learning this, and as a result, the fruit growers in that section received a better 'price for their fruit than did our Pleasant Grove growers. A few years back when our peach orchards were young and before the twig borer became such a problem, Pleasant Grove had the reputation ot producing the finest peaches in Utah county. The reason we are not holding hold-ing that reputation is because we have not given proper attention to pruning, thinning, and pest control, and many have held to the old, but erroneous, idea that peach trees need not be sprayed only every two or three years; also neglected to replace old trees with new orchards. We have also allowed the peach tree borer, to lower the vitality of the trees, the result of which is small undersized un-dersized peaches. The control of the peach tree borer used to be a long tedious operation but since Paradi-chlorobenzene Paradi-chlorobenzene has coime into use, it is comparatively easy and inexpensive. inexpen-sive. The following recommendations for the control of the Peach tree borer bor-er and Peach twig borer will give satisfactory results if followed. Without With-out these methods profitable peach growing is impossible. Peach Tree Borer, Paradichlorben-zene Paradichlorben-zene as follows: year old tree, ounce. 3 year old tree, once. 4 year old tree once. 5 year old tree and over, 1 ounce. Material should be applied in early September. Many may be killed by applying it in May. It should be placed in circular trench around tree, 1 inch deep and 2 or 3 inches from the tree. Peach Twig Borer, Lime sulphur 10 gallons. Basic arsenate of lead. 3 pounds. Water to make 100 gallons. Applied during pink bud stage. Burn infested prunings and clean up around orchard. Experts tell us that there are no better, and only few as good, sections sec-tions for peach growing as Pleasant Grove and vicinity. We have the right kind of soil, soil conditions, temperature, etc. Let us take a better bet-ter advantage of this resource along with the other industries previously treated in the Review, and thus make Pleasant Grove a prosperous, happy and better place in which to live.
