Show o Legion Sponsors 'Boys' State' At Nat'l Guard Camp Announcement of a Utah Boys' State, a miniature state in which boys from virtually every community in the state will camp under their own government, was received this week by Commander Wilburn E. Hoggard of American Legion Post 49. The camp will be held at Camp Williams, July 5 to 15. According to word received by Mr. Hoggard from George S. Ballif, chairman, each Legion post will be entitled to send one boy for each 11 paid up members of the post. Only boys of good moral character who have reached their junior or senior year in high school, or boys of good moral character of equivalent mental men-tal age not in school, are eligible. American Fork post 49 will be entitled en-titled to send three boys, Commander Com-mander Hoggard announced, for the ten days. The Boys' State camp is in line with the American Legion's Americanism Ameri-canism program. It is intended to convey to the Boy Citizens attending attend-ing the encampment, the knowledge of how his government is just what he makes it and to develop a sense of responsibility as to the duty of a citizen. According to the plan, a number of cities will be organized, and a miniature state government will be set up. With the aid of adult advisors, ad-visors, the boys will run their governmental gov-ernmental units, including the executive, ex-ecutive, judicial and legislative divisions. di-visions. In addition to the more serious aspect of the camp, there will be a varied recreation program for the ten day. |
