Show Firemen Present 1400 Gifts to Children Fourteen hundred packages, 1400 oranges, and 2800 sticks of candy were presented to approximately 1400 American Fork children under the age of 12 last Thursday. The sound of the siren attracted the children to the festival along with a large crowd of interested townspeople. towns-people. The children were formed into lines outside the fire station under the direction of Fire Chief Irving L. Pratt with the assistance of firemen fire-men and local citizens. The wives of the firemen presented the "kiddies" "kid-dies" with the presents as they filed fil-ed through the station. A novel situation developed when Chief Pratt discovered that not all the packages, candy and oranges had been given away. Gathering all the citizens who were found on Main street between the telephone office and the Peoples State Bank, Mr. Pratt marched them through the business section of town and past the Christmas tree on First West and Main. Then imitating the childhen, these men were led through the fire station where Santa Claus presented each with a gift. The grounds outside the station was packed with citizens watching this peculiar situation. As each "child" imerged from the building, roars of laughter and shouts burst forth. Wayne Booth and "Pap" Greenwood Green-wood provided the crowd with much amusement, as Santa Claus questioned ques-tioned these aged gentlemen. Mayor L. B. Adamson said, "I don't know when I had more fun." Bystanders were complementary in their comments in the manner in which Chief Pratt handled the crowd. There is certainly no need of criticism, several citizens said, in the way in which this event was handled this year. "It is one of the most successful Christmas trees that has ever been presented." Chief Pratt stated. "All of the business houses, clerks, and individuals on the street, with no exceptions, helped when asked." o |
