Railroad. Rail-road. The service will operate between be-tween Chicago and San Francisco and Los Angeles, with fast schedules provided for intervening cities. Announcement An-nouncement of this innovation for speedy travel to and from both World's Fairs was made today by W. E. Fuller, Vice-President. This fleet of buses is being built at a cost of approximately $500,000. Comfort features heretofore unknown un-known in cross-country travel are being provided by the manufacturers, manufactur-ers, the Yellow Coach Division of General Motors Corporation at Detroit. De-troit. These new buses with their advanced ad-vanced air-conditioning will afford constant temperature despite the naturally varying altitudes and climates cli-mates encountered in transcontinental transcontinen-tal travel. While there is automatic thermostatic control, it can be ad-Justed ad-Justed by the driver as desired. Interiors of the new buses have been specially designed in restful and harmonious colors. All windows are extra wide and a double-pane safety glass, sealed permanently against dust, outside temperatures and noises. A new type of sash is used which, it is said, prevents fogging fog-ging or frosting under most extreme weather conditions. This increased visibility for scenic pleasure is further furth-er helped by seats at the proper window win-dow level, an important safety provision. pro-vision. There are also Venetian-type Venetian-type blinds individually controlled from each seat. The exteriors will be painted in Cream and Crimson, the familiar colors of the coast-to-coast service of National Trailways. Although the bodies of the new cruisers are designed in size to accommodate ac-commodate 37 passengers, there are seats for but 28 in order to supply more leg room and reclining comfort. Seats are of the new sponge rubber and are adjustable to five positions, one more than in ordinary buses, the fifth providing a comfortable sleeping position without interference interfer-ence to passenger in seat behind. In addition to the air-conditioning by Frigidaire, another new convenience Includes accessibility to the baggage compartment from inside the bus. This new feature is particularly desirable de-sirable to travelers on long trips. In adopting Diesel power for these buses, the Burlington Trailways, one of the original members of the National Na-tional Trailways System, has followed follow-ed the pioneering example of their parent organization with the Zephyrs of railroad fame, which have proved so succesful. "These newest additions to the Burlington Trailways system were specifically designed for transcontinental transcon-tinental service," said William Tran-zer, Tran-zer, Passenger Traffic Manager, "and are being built for maximum comfort com-fort and convenience on long trips. Within the past four years the Bur- lington Trailways has operated 365,-000 365,-000 bus miles per month on its through routes between Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles, in addition to its extensive service throughout the Middle West and West." n |
