SIXST liOlL fix mmm "via Bryan Hofheins had 10 points and a bundle of assists in PG's game with Ogden Tuesday night. Vikings take lead, lose lead, lose game, try again another day By JACK KILL Worse case scenario: lead throughout the game and get edged on the last shot. For the Pleasant Grove Vikings, the above happened late Tuesday night at the Marriott Center. After leading from the opening basket, one time by 15 points, the Vikes fell to Ogden, 71-6- in the opening round of the state 3-- A Basketball Tournament. Delayed 45 minutes because of the previous games running late, Pleasant Grove jumped on top of Ogden 19-1- 3 in the first quarter. Each of the five starters, Lincoln Church, Bryan Hofheins, Russ Van Dyke, Nathan Ash, and Tyler Ped-erse-scored in the first 8 minutes to put PG on top. By halftime, the Vikes had built the lead to nine, 40-3- and appeared in control of the t game. Jug Jacklin came off the bench in the second period to hit three field goals and Church added 6 points to pace the Viking attack. The story line continued in the third quarter with Church scoring 9 and the Vikes led 59-3- 9 to start the final period. Using balanced scoring, Ogden started a slow, but consistent comeback and the Tigers tied the score at 69 with 59 seconds left to play. The Vikes worked the ball into Church in the low post and the big left-hand- made a move on the baseline. There was contact. Church went down and the ball went out of bounds. It was a foul if you were cheering for PG and a slip if you were a Tiger fan. Ogden got the ball out ofboun ds, worked the clock down to 21 sec-onds and took a time out. As the scoreboard clock ticked inside 3 seconds, Curt Knowles fired a 15-fo- jumper from the right side that bounced three times before dropping in for the winning points. PG managed to call time out ' with :0 1 second left but with 90 feet to go the chances of scoring were very slim. A length of the court pass was unsuccessful leaving the dejected Vikes the unpleasant task of re-turning to play in the consolation round in less than 12 hours. PG played Payson at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Church finished with 24, Jack-lin had 14, Ash 12, Hofheins 10, Pedersen 5 and Van Dyke 4 for PG. PG had 20 two-poi- goals, five three-pointe- rs and made 14 of 22 from the line. Ogden had 23 s, four three- - pointers and made 13 of 25 from the line. The Viking-Payso- n matchup was the third time the two teams ' have played this year. PG won the first game back in January, 77- - 62, while the Lions won on their floor earlier this month, 82-7- Again, former Viking assistant, John Wardenburg, will challenge his friend Bruce Bushnell in a friendly game of hoops. Payson lost to Judge Memorial in the opening round. I If the Vikes win they will play at J 3:10 p.m. today (Feb. 23).
