Show Battlecreek DUP hears member history, lesson manont settlement there. He felt a special obligation to help the Indian people improve their condition. He trusted them and won their respect through his honest dealings with them. He built a large log house and wanted to put in a dam to irrigate their crops. The Indians were reluctant but .Jacob told them if they would help built it there would be enough water for them all. The following season they had wonderful crops. A woman from South Carolina brought enough cotton seeds to plant five acres. The cotton plants produced well, over 200 lbs., enabling them to make stockings for their families. Refreshments were served by hostesses Barbara Baxter. Wanda Grames, Huth Bezzant and Linda Hales. Daughters of Utah Pioneers Battlecreek Camp held their Kebruary meeting in the Garden Boom of the City Recreation Center. Co-captain Lucille Faddis conducted con-ducted and welcomed everyone out on such a cold, wintry day. Captain Colleen Gardiner offered the invocation and a pledge of allegiance to the flag was given. Chorister Jean Worthington, with Maymetta Johnson at the piano, led in a song, "My Country Tis of Thee." A history was given by Donna Wall, who was born Oct. 9 in Salt Lake City, to George Lambert and Louise Capson Woodbury. She was the fourth child out of six brothers and sisters. She attended school at Highland Park in Salt Lake City, the University of Utah and BYU. She married Andrew Wall in li)4( in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of seven children. She displayed a beautiful quilt she began making in l!)K.r), depicting the Wall family history that she has just com pleted. Beth Hobb gave an interesting lesson on the early settlement of Santa Clara in Washington County, located five miles northwest of St. George. Parley P. Pratt first visited the area in lHfiO. Four years later, missionaries were sent to work with the Paiute Indians of southern Utah. Some went into Harmony and others into Santa Clara. With them was Jacob Hamblin, who became well-known and highly regarded as a peacemaker among the Indians. He was sent by Brigham young to set up a per- |
