Review - Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1988 Vikings blast Uintah to keep hopes of a playoff Junior avoid any possibility with Uintah to get into the state tournament. Actually, fifth place is a better draw than fourth in Region 8. The fourth place team must play Region 8 number 2 (Provo most likely with an outside chance of Timpview) in the first round of the State Tour-nament. Since Provo and Timpview have been the only two teams ranked in the top spot all season, playing another team from another region appears to be a better draw. Varsity Coach Alan Bahrs i squad posted anoth with balanced scoring fJ victory over Uintah Nathan Ash wbje" right behind t U, and fi and Bryan Hofeins J Jeff Swenson scored, Church and Chad each. fllJti The junior varsity,, stands at a very lofty With five Region 8 teams qualifying for the State Basketball Tournament, PG s game at Uintah last Tuesday was critical to the Viking post-seaso- n hopes. Coach Bruce Bushnell's squad took the long winter bus ride in stride and blew away the Utes, 81-6- 2 PG used big first quarters from Craig Hayden and Greg Grothe, each had 10 points, to build a seven point lead, 24-1- When the Utes adjusted to slow down PG's inside big men, John Olsen came through with 9 points in the second period to take up the slack and the Vikes were on top 45-2- 8 at halftime. A foul-plagu- second half, the Vikes went to the line 23 times and made 15, was a standoff with the Vikings going on to win by a 19 point spread. Grothe had 25 for PG with Hayden getting 21 and Olsen finishing with 15. Dave Flinders and Derrick Dickerson each had 7 with Jeff Swenson adding 4 and Kurt Victor and Russ VanDyke one each. Tonight's home game against Payson opens a key three game Region 8 home stand. Friday, Carbon comes to the PG gym and the league ending game finds Springville here on Feb. 17. PG needs to win two of the three to Lady Vikes named as Players of Week lit :!'llKltiliBlll '' '' ' '' ' '''' ' ' . I f j Spring Smith, a 5'8 Sophomore, and Lori Curtis, a junior, have been selected by the Coaching Staff as Players of the Week. "Coach Neresa Nielsen said, "Spring scored 23 points for us this week. That contribution along with her rebounding helped the team in two victories." The coaches noted that her consistent over-al- l hustle, as well as good rebounding and some great baseline moves are her individual strengths. The Laay Viking expressed pride in this selection and said, "I feel we have an awesome team and I'm glad that I can be part of it." She explained that attending the clinics that Coach Bone has conducted has helped her with basketball skills, as well as volleyball and feels that practice is the best way to improve on the things in which you are coached. Other sports she enjoys are, baseball, soccer and volleyball. Spring is the daughter of Brent and Carolyn Smith and she would like to continue to play basketball after high school. Her plans include college after high school graduation. Lori plays guard for the Lady Vikings. The coaches mentioned that Lori has had a lot of desire and determination to come back this season following knee surgery. "Lori thinks well on the floor. She has put a lot into adapting to a new Lori Curtis Spring Smith school and team," the coach said. Lori said, "My injuries have slowed me down, but hard work is all it takes. I've also participated in weight lifting and have a great desire to win." When asked how she felt about this honor she said, "I was surprised, but I've tried to work hard and I knew I would have to do double duty to get back into it." As she talked about this year's season Lori exclaimed, "We really need to stick together during the remainder of the season. I think that is a must if we get to state." Before coming to f.G., Lori was a setter at Orem High, played soccer in California and took first place in tennis singles at Alpine Day in ninth grade. She has also enjoyed being President of the Honor Society in seventh grade, Student body historian in eighth, and vice president of her Seminary class this year. Lori is the daughter of George and Jan Curtis and intends to go to the University of Hawaii for two years, then to medical school, where she will prepare for a career as a physical therapist in athletics. Pleasant Grove swimmers qualify for state tourney have spent more time together," Kevin noted. She has spent many hours on her own while I have been working with the swimmers," Kevin added that he had never seen a more relaxed diver when the pressure is on. Mary seemed to always dive better at the big meets when everyone is watching as compared to her practice sessions, he concluded. Adam Rupper, Kelly Kortman, and Andy Weight, all juniors, will be representing the boys' team at the Championships. Adam will swim the 50 freestyle on Friday, Kelly will swim the 200 individual medley on Friday and the 100 freestyle on Saturday, and Andy will swim the 100 breastroke on Saturday. These three are the first three boys to quality for the State Championships in Pleasant Grove's history. All three hold the school records in their individual events. Ninth Grader Michelle Palmer did a fine job of introducing herself into the Utah High School Swim-ming scene by taking the Region 8 Breastroke Title. She surprised a lot of other swimmers and coaches by winning the breastroke. She won the race by over a second. She swam a 1:18:17. She also took a third in the 50 freestyle, she swam a 27.24. She did all this after fighting an illness all week which has kept her out of the pool. Michelle already owns the 100 breastroke record for the school, which is a 1 : 17.19, but she also plans on taking the 50 freestyle record away from Tracie Mills who swam a 26.60 last year. She will be swimming at the State Championship Friday and Saturday at the BYU pool. Mary Hill, another ninth grader, also surprised many people. With only three months experience Mary dove her way into second place at the Region Diving Championships. Coach Kevin Dickerson said that Mary has been a very coachable athlete. Since Pleasant Grove only has one coach for all of the boys and girls swimming and diving program, Mary hasn't been receiving all of the attention and coaching she deserves, he said. "I feel that she could have easily taken the Region Title if we could Jayyee ladies record two more wins in region plav Boosters and fans of Pleasant Grove High School basketball are already excited about next year's possibilities as the girls and boys Jr. Varsity are sporting winning records. Two more wins were recorded this week for the ladies. Defeat of the Springville red devils came as a result of the 100 percent effort on the part of every Viking on the floor. The final score showed the Vikings winning by 24 points in a run away game 54-3- VaLynn Storey was the sparkler hitting three for 13 total points. Joy Warner added 10. Against Carbon, the first half seemed it could be a contest, with the Dinos taking the lead and the battle becoming just that. The Vikings took it to them and broke it open in the third quarter. The scrappy Viking team won by a score of 60-4- 1 with VaLynn Storey hitting her 3 point shots to help her team forge out front. Storey added another home run in the varsity game which made it four for the night. Spring Smith led the offensive effort with 15, as she was effective inside in hitting her shots. She was also instrumental in bringing the ball down as she led in rebounds. Storey added 11 points and Raquel Scott and Joy Warner each had 8. |
