Show How did it feel to see one's strength and vitality being smothered by old age when the Church needed strong, vital leadership? How did it feel to be away from wives and children, knowing he might never see them again even though they were only a short distance away in Salt Lake? "I want to shake the hand of the man who shot Chuck Owen in the foot," Taylor said when he reached the bottom of the stairs. Ben stood up and walked over to the prophet, taking the old hand in his young, strong one. Ben felt firmness and warmth in the hand as he looked into the old man's eyes. "Tell me, young man, did he holler? "Like a pup that had been stepped on by a horse," Ben answered. "That does my heart good," grinned the prophet. "I hope the Lord will forgive me for taking delight in another man's pain." "I bet he will," Bateman added loudly from across the room. "Young man, will you share an evening walk with me?" the prophet asked. "I'd be honored," Ben said, turning with Taylor towards the door. "Too risky, boss," Bateman said. "Don't know who might see you or what young deputy might be hiding in the marshes wanting to become a hero." "With Ben Storm at my side, I'll be quite safe," Taylor said, continuing con-tinuing towards the door. Ben felt his heart swell with pride. He thought back when he had cowered before Vandercook and Owen. So much had happened since then, especially within himself. The prophet's confidence was justified. If something happened, Ben would maintain a calm mind and would fight -- even die, if necessary -defending the prophet. Besides, both Lobo and Bateman would probably tag along, too. "I like to walk at dusk," Taylor said as they stepped off the porch. "Can't be seen from the road, yet light enough to see where you're putting your feet." Ben didn't say anything, content to listen to the prophet. "It did me a world of good when you plugged those deputies and rescued those women," said Taylor. Ben told him about his recent run-in with Owen, the rescue of Parish, the prison escape and how they had run off with the marshal's sheep. The president wanted to hear every detail, and Ben was glad to comply. "It makes me feel young again to listen to your adventures," Taylor said. "Your boldness in defending the kingdom gives me strength." "Thank you," Ben said. (To be continued) |
