Show Better Business Bureau explains new phone bills to consumers These days consumers are KettinK more than one monthly telephone bill. One hill, notes the Better Musiness Bureau, is for local service. Another is for renting the phone equipment in your home unless you buy the equipment outright from the phone company or a retail merchant selling telephone products. And you mihl-receive mihl-receive still another hill from the loan -distance carrier you use. In buying loan distance service, you have several companies from which to choose. In fact, there are more than 2(K) such firms, hut many of them are limited to specific areas, i.e., they don't service some states and even some nearby communities. You may lo able to save by shopping around to find what's available in lonu distance service. The savings can amount to as much as 50 percent or more. Be sure you investigate all possibilities, urges the BBB, when subscribing for the service. First consider cost. Then find out: does the company provide service to your community; does the company serve the cities and towns you call most frequently; what are the company's installation and monthly maintenance fees; is the cancellation procedure carefully outlined; does the company offer added services such as emlit cards and local customer service.
