Show Spends cold hour on playground 6-year-old trapped in tire A six-year-old Pleasant Grove kindergartener kin-dergartener spent a very uncomfortable uncomforta-ble hour-plus Tuesday morning caught in a tire arrangement used as playground equipment at Grovecrest School. Chad Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Peterson,.416 E. 1220 N., climbed into' the tires during morning morn-ing recess. His teacher, Miss Olson, could not get him out. He was stuck. According to Janice Brown, secretary secre-tary at the school, Chad had climbed v into the tires which are piled one upon the other, about five tires high. They are bolted together and could not be separated. Apparently Chad got his legs twisted down in such a way that he could not get out and those helping him could not pry him out without danger of breaking his legs. The child, who did not have a coat on, was not hurt but toward the end he did become frightened, Mrs. Brown said. When the teachers and custodians could not release Chad they called the police. Then a hack saw was used to cut through the tires which were steel belted radials and then Chad was freed. The men received several cuts on their arms from the steel in the tires as they sawed through the tires. Police officers Bert Bean and Dave Vickers assisted the school personnel in rescuing the child. The incident began at 10:20 a.m. and the boy was CHAD PETERSON, center, discusses his ordeal of being caught in a playground apparatus at Grovecrest School with two of his rescuers, Roland Morford, left, and Don Bell. freed at 11:30 a.m. The tires have been on the playground play-ground for many years.
