While Easter is their "biggest demand" time, they also are busy during the Christmas season. "We hire 25 persons during our rush season," Mrs. Matheson said, nothing while they do have the local store, their biggest business is the wholesale end - known as 'Kencraft.' The store sells to stores throughout the country such as Macy's, Bloomingdale's, the entire J.C. Penny chain and ZCMI. Topping decorations on some of the well-know- n candy brands come from the chocolate factory in Alpine. "We never dreamed the business would take off like this when we started," Mrs. Matheson laughed. The business got its start when Marlene started making small sugar Easter eggs of the panorama variety as a hobby. She sold them from their home in Denver, Colorado, and stores would take only a few at a time. After the family moved to Salt Lake, the Matheson's began selling the sugar eggs to retailers, but were soon asked to do more. "We would sell one or two eggs to a firm on consignment. Then the next year, would go back and say 'those eggs sold, why not take a few more' and they did," Mrs. Matheson recalled. Soon requests began coming in for small candy flowers and other varieties of icing decorations. After attending a candy convention in Chicago about seven or eight years ago, their business really took off. "People were amazed at the hand-crafte- d cake and icing decorations," Mrs. Matheson said. Mr. Matheson, after 15 years with the Bureau of Land Management, quit his job to head the business. "He is the head and I'm the heart," Mrs. Matheson says. The company has recently expanded into the building that used to house Alpine Lumber, and uses the upstairs for the cake and candy decorations. They have an inventory that includes more than 200 chocolate molds - some that require up to 10 pounds of chocolate. "We use 20,000 pounds of chocolate - 10 tons - Mr. Matheson said, and 25 tons of sugar. Their compound confectioners coating comes in 10 different flavors, and they have a yogurt flavored coating. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and everyone is welcome to drop in and see what's available in an candy store.
