Show Jf Lindon Fifth Grades Hear U.S. Reports v. 3 By LINDA HARRIS "Can you tell me what 15 three nicknames s Georgia has?" asked Mike Jacklin, fifth 7 grader at Lindon tes Elementary, Tuesday, 1 March 30, during a ?Ii presentation by his e" class on states of the union given to other students in the school. The idea of making an oral presentation on various states was the product of several ideas brought together by one of the fifth grade JJ teachers, Michelle Behunin. Behunin, now in her fifth year of i teaching at the school, '5 has taken a subject that could be tedious and very boring and made it an exciting learning experience. The children were given a choice of the state they would like to 8S report on. (Oddly enough, only one chose Utah.) One young man chose Ohio "because my brother is on a mission there." The 31 students I then got busy and did a j 10-page written report, drew maps and chalkboard illustrations showing state flags, state birds, etc., 5 gathered pictures, and built some unique-looking unique-looking diaramas in preparation for the oral presentations. The reports were given Tuesday afternoon af-ternoon and then again that night to the parents. By the time the children had presented the information to a dozen groups or more, they knew extremely well some very interesting in-teresting facts about the particular state they had chosen. Did you know that Maine is one of the best places for fishing? Just ask Blaine Steele. And were you aware that Georgia was once under water and you can still find whale bones and shark's teeth there? What state would you say claims the legendary legen-dary Paul Bunyan? The three-dimensional diaramas were each unique - anything from a small replica of the Astrodome to Paul Bunyan and his Big Blue Ox. By the way, Georgia's three nicknames are the Empire State- of the South, the Peach State, and the Goober State, Oh, and where does Paul Bunyan call home? Well, he's been known to have been seen in the Pine State, Maine. However, Minnesota also claims him as their native son. But then he was probably big enough to have lived in both at the same time. |
