Rabbits are among the most' popular, but they also have horses, chickens, lambs and goats to work with, Young says. He says they have also been able to keep gardening projects going throughout the year with the aid of a greenhouse. "The new Adventure and Learning Park that will be opening June 6 will be another big plus to our programs," Young says. "It will give the kids easy access to overnight camping facilities, a stocked lake and specially designed wheelchair playgrounds and nature trails." The park will also include a petting zoo featuring animals from the school's farm and hopefully some local wildlife, Young says. Art Jones, assistant state 4-- director at USU, says he thinks Young has been so successful with programs for the handicapped because of his tremendous outlook on life. "He has a background of working with juvenile delinquents, he has 10 kids of his own and he rarely gets upset," Jones says. "He once took one of those written stress tests and scored a zero. ' ' Young is quick to give credit to all the volunteers that make the H programs go. "We are fortunate to be so close to BYU where we get a lot of young aggressive volunteers," Young says. "We have also received support from all over the state in the way of donated animals and equipment for the kids." "With the help of some patient and gutsy volunteers we have been able to reach all but the most severely residents and we hope someday to even work up some ac-tivities for them," Young says. the State Training School in Fork were a county, it would Ilf one of the highest participation in the state. Training School, says that Utah is the h state in the nation to incorporate 4-- programs directly into a mentally tk handicapped institution, n The program is one factor that l'I makes it so a visitor to the school could 5'. easily forget that it is an institution for the mentally handicapped, Although there are some signs of necessary constraint visible in some parts of the school, for the most part the area looks like a campus one I; might see anywhere else in the country. Residents move from building to building each hour to attend classes and - to go to their part-tim- e jobs, t Young, who is heading up the National I "Task Force for Handicapped "i Programs" this year, has been working with the kids at the school for the last three and one-ha- lf years. "Age is irrelevant here," Young says, "Although some of the may be physically 30-4-0 years old, they often function at the level of He says with the help of volunteers from BYU, he has been able to form 10-- i: 15 4-- clubs that meet every Saturday morning. Some of the kids can do only elementary art work while others are able to do more complicated cooking or i animal projects. Some progress, while others have been doing the same project for as long as 11 years, Young says, Like all the State Training j School kids like to compete for ribbons. Since only some of the better entries ever make it to the county or state fairs, the school held its own 4-- fair in March. Young says they gave out 450 ribbons this year and had many of the kids' projects filmed by Utah State University f television.
