Show Judge Defeats Vikings In Opener Starting with Hilton were seniors, Brett Campbell and Dale Howe and .uniors Tom Bird and Chris Kitchen. Campbell played his sophomore season at PG but moved to Nevada last year while Bird elected not to play last season. Bob Brown, a senior, played well in spurts and sophomores Matt Norman and Jim Brown got into the game long ' enough to score six points between them. PG played at Payson last night and travels to Lehi Saturday. All three teams, soph, jv and varsity will be in action against the Pioneers with the sophs playing first at 3:30 p.m. In the jv game at Judge, PG spotted the Bulldogs 10 points early and then played even for the rest of the game. The final score was Judge 64. PG 57. Coach Jim Verkovich was crying the blues Friday in a pre-game coaches baloney session. Verkovich, basketball coach and assistant principal at Judge Memorial was worried about his teams preparation. "We had a superficial tryout Monday after school and then practiced at 6:30 p.m." said Verkovich. The reason for the late start was due to Judges successful football season that ended just seven days before when the Bulldogs had trounced Jordan for the 3-A football title. "Our first eight players were on the football team and the starting five made All-Stale," said Verkovich. When the game got underway it was evident that the Bulldogs were less than smooth, but the hastily converted con-verted footballers proved that you don't need weeks to get ready to play a game. Of course Judge has superior athletes this year and eventually they'll be a very good basketball team. As it was, they had enough fire power to beat PG 61-45. PG's Craig Hilton, just a junior, was a steady performer at the guard line for Coach Keith Allred's inexperienced inex-perienced squad. Calling the team inexperienced is an understatement. Actually Allred does not have a player back with any varsity experience. ex-perience. Dan Thomas, who played some last year will not be eligible until January and the rest of the Vikes had never been in a varsity game. |
